Our Story ...
Heather McCartney is the designer and founder of Ethnic Edibles®, the
Africa-inspired cookie cutter set, and Coquí Cookies™, the Puerto Rico-inspired cookie cutter set. Her captivation with the decorative and tribal arts of African culture, and the indigenous history of the Taíno led to her desire to replicate them and share them in a fun and educational way. Heather made her first journey to Africa in 1997. It was in South Africa that she learned more about the tribal arts of the Ndebele and Zulu nations. Eager to share her enthusiasm with others, she baked a batch of gingerbread cookies with facial scarifications based upon the many masks and dolls she admired. The unique cultural cookies captured the attention of families, educators, bakers and retailers and soon were in demand. This interest propelled her to learn more about traditional symbols of African culture andsoon after Ethnic Edibles was born!
A native New Yorker, born in East Harlem, Ms. McCartney was a dance educator in public schools for many years and continues to work and advocate for arts education opportunities for all. Her Caribbean heritage and upbringing in Spanish Harlem inspired her to find a creative way to celebrate the Boricuas – Puerto Ricans, and their history and symbols. Coquí Cookies was launched in 2002. Both cutter sets illustrate positive global contributions from diverse cultures. In 2010 she personally delivered the African cutters to The White House and recently gifted a set to a visiting contingent of students from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. When they learned their country inspired Ethnic Edibles, they honored her with hugs and an
impromptu South African cheer of thanks.
